Birth order correct?
(Richards lived on W side of Hwy btwn SpF & BF, by water tank)
Ruth Painter Henshaw knows one of Maude Richards’ granddaughters, Donna Richards Wainguard [surname uncertain]. Donna knew Mom & Dad (Preston & Helen).
Bob remembered a story — it was a few days before Grma Painter died. He and Cathy took Dick and went to see Grma Painter. Aunt Mildred and others were also there. Grandma wanted to hold the baby. Bob was a teenager and wasn’t sure if it was ok — Grma was very frail + he was worried she might drop the baby. He said he looked at the others’ response + they weren’t worried, so he let her hold the baby. She was only able to hold him for a short time.

Bob said Grma Painter clearly loved all the grandchildren + she especially loved her youngest, Dick.

Grandpa Painter
Bob said he used to pester Gpa w/ questions, and was always asking Gpa “why? why? why?”
Gpa responded, “Why? To make little boys ask questions.”
Bob said this wasn’t just a brush off — Gpa was teaching him to watch + observe and learn for himself — not to only ask questions.
He said Gpa was very purposeful in teaching his grandchildren.
Grandma Borell caught in prairie fire on her way from ranch to Belle Fourche. Hers and Gpa Borell’s son — Archie? — was killed in the fire (9 yrs old?). She never really forgave herself for this — always asking herself how she could’ve saved him. She buried him herself on the prairie.
Highway 85 was moved ______ [when?], from Buffalo to BF. Dad, Joe + Grma Painter moved his grave from the prairie to Camp Crook cemetery to be w/ Gpa + Grma Borell.
