Carol Painter Named Secretary of the Roubaix Rangers Senior Staff

Two photographs in the Deadwood Pioneer-Times showed the newly installed officers of the Roubaix Rangers 4-H Club, seated for their portraits after a meeting held Saturday evening at the Lynx Club Hall near Deadwood.

Carol Painter was installed as secretary of the senior staff. She is pictured seated in the lower photograph, alongside Kelly Corcan, president, and Rick McKee, treasurer, with Ardel Stuen, reporter, Dick Painter, vice president, and Rusty Stuen, photographer, standing behind them. The junior officers, pictured above, were Mike Thalacker, Mike McKee, Colleen McKee, Norman Stuen, Richard Eddy, and Terry Kress.

The club had adopted a twin-slate arrangement, with juniors thirteen years and younger and senior officers thirteen and over. The paper explained the reasoning plainly: the plan was meant to give more youngsters the privilege of learning by doing.

Note for the archive. Two Painters hold senior offices here — Carol as secretary and Dick as vice president. The surname of the senior president is printed as “Corcan” on broken type and may be a shortening of Corcoran; it is worth verifying against a cleaner issue.

Carol Painter Named a Girls State Citizen

Three Lead High School juniors — Cathie Caropino, Marcia Magers, and Carol Painter — were named the school’s Girls State Citizens for 1970. The girls were nominated by the faculty and elected by popular vote of the junior class. Selection required demonstrated leadership, standing in the upper third of the class, and outstanding qualifications of character, service, initiative, and patriotism. The encampment, sponsored statewide by the American Legion Auxiliary and locally by the Auxiliary of Homestake Post No. 31, was to be held on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University, June 7–13.

Of Carol, the paper wrote that she had taken part in debate, extemporaneous speaking, and declamation for the previous two years and was a member of the National Forensic League. She had been active in the Girls’ Athletic Association for two years and had served two years on the Student Council. She was secretary of the German Club that year. She is identified as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Painter.

Carol Painter Teaches Sunday School at Rochford Community Church
Lead Daily Call, May 15, 1970 — Page 5

A photograph in the Lead Daily Call shows the members of the Rochford Community Church who made up the chapel board and Sunday School staff. The adult group met on the second and fourth Sundays of each month with Rev. Harold Bayley of Lead as minister, and the Sunday School classes were held on those same dates.

Carol Painter appears in the group, and the caption closes by noting that she taught the younger group of Sunday School students. She was a junior at Lead High School at the time.

Note for the archive. This is a photograph of the family together in their own community — Preston, Marion, Carol, Dick, and Dan Painter all in one frame — and it anchors the Rochford connection to the church rather than only to ranching and 4-H. Henry Lasher, standing beside Carol, is the same Henry Lasher named as leader of the Roubaix Rangers in the 1966 roster.
